Tapered Ring Gage

Ring gages are an industry standard.  These gages are used to inspect circular components during and after production.  Ring gages are used to compare spindle or shaft dimensions or locations to specific tolerances.  Go and no-go gages limit gages based on plus or minus tolerances from a specified dimension.  Tapered Ring Gages use essentially the same process as regular ring gages except that regular ring gages are measuring a flat hole and tapered ring gages measured a tapered spindle or shaft.

The tapered ring gage is often used for measuring high precision spindle or shaft dimensions.  Tapered devices have a conical form.

Application example:
Tapered roller bearings use the tapered plug gage to measure the cup component of the bearing assembly.  Tapered ring gages are used to measure the cone component of the same bearing assembly.

Go / No-go:
Rings are available in plain (smooth, unthreaded), threaded, cylindrical and tapered forms to Go, No-go or nominal tolerances.  There are three main types of ring gages: go, no-go, and master or setting ring gages.

“Go gage” dimensions are based on the minimum inside diameter (ID) of the component to be inspected.  “No-go” gauge dimensions are based on the minimum outside diameter (OD) of the inspected part.  Master rings (or ring masters) are used to calibrate and set up the tapered ring gage.

With Go / No-go ring gages; inspectors can quickly pass or fail parts without taking time consuming readings from a measuring instrument.  Plain ring gages are also ideal for use as masters for setting bore gages, air gages, and internal micrometers. By using the same size master ring gage, lead error on measurements can be eliminated.

Direction of Tolerances:
MASTER - Bilateral (Split) Tolerance
GO - Unilateral (Minus) Tolerance
NOGO - Unilateral (Plus) Tolerance

Tapered Ring Gage Types:
Pneumatic systems (or air gages) measure the change in pressure in air nozzles inside the tapered rings.
Electronic gages use electronic probes to sense displacement of a stylus.
Mechanical gages compare physical movement of a gage spindle to determine part features and dimensions.

Specifying Tapered Ring Gages:
Attributes of the tapered ring gage that must be specified include the ring diameter, set range and set increments.  Specify measurements in metric or imperial dimensions.
