Hydraulic Bolt Tensioning

Hydraulic bolt tensioning is a safe and reliable alternative to other forms of bolt tensioning. Bolt tightness is imperative to safety and life of the final assembly. Under-tightened, over-tightened, or uneven-tightened bolts can lead to joint failure. Because friction has a significant effect on the torque-tension relationship, accurate bolt tension is difficult to control by using torque methods.

Loading the Hydraulic Bolt Tensioning Device
Hydraulic bolt tensioning quickly applies a consistent load to stud bolts. Load is induced into the stud bolts, which causes elongation of the stud bolts and compression of the gasket. Hydraulic bolt tensioning essentially eliminates any uncertainties that occur with other tightening methods. Consistency and reliability are key factors in the advantages of hydraulic bolt tensioning.

Hydraulic bolt tensioning is safer and more accurate than other processes. Many hydraulic bolt tensioning equipment options can accomplish tasks up to 6” stud sizes, requiring a pressure of 38500 nm.

Parts of a Hydraulic Tensioning Device
Hydraulic bolt tightening equipment has multiple components including a body, a piston, and an annular chamber between the body and the piston to adjust fluid (hydraulic oil) under pressure. The device is often used for tensioning a bolt or screw-thread component. The component is able to be fully tightened onto a bolt to allow stress on the bolt and hardware assembly.
